New Orleans, LA Part Deux

The fun isn’t over yet! I’ve been down here for going on a month and still looking for new and cool things to check out down here. Here are a few more places to see and experience whenever you get the chance to make it to this wonderful city. Laissez les bon temps rouler!

Faubourg Brewery

Faubourg (“Fo-Burg”) Brewing Company  is the new name of the former Dixie Brewery. Dixie started in 1907 in New Orleans and survived through Prohibition and 2 world wars. Hurricane Katrina destroyed the original brewery in August of 2005 but was rebuilt in 2017 by Gayle and Tom Benson, the owners of the Saints. The name changed last year to Faubourg which is the french word for “neighborhood,” which really captures the essence of this brewery.

We went on a Thursday night which is their Family Night and this was an amazing experience. They have a lot to offer for everyone at the brewery. They have a large Connect 4, a full disc golf course, bocce ball courts, a putting green, and a pond with a sidewalk if you just want to walk around and enjoy your beer. But on family night, they added two bouncy houses which my nephew had a blast jumping around in. Apparently the night we went was a special night and had the Oscar Meier Weiner mobile out with fun little freebies for the kids like stickers and whistles. We were even able to bring the dog out and even inside, the whole area is dog friendly! And yes, you’ll be able to find pet station around the seating area as well as the pond.

The beers here from what I had were excellent. They have so many styles of beers but you’ll find that they have more in cans than on draft. I went for the Faubourg Lager, which was a great light bodied pilsner, and the Dat’Suma IPA which had more of a west coast taste of IPAs. Both of which I really enjoyed, and went very well with the food. Speaking of, they do have a food truck and a kitchen in the brewery as well. Fete au Fete is the in house food supplier and they have a lot of offer! Wanting to take a break from the cajun food, I went for their Nashville Hot Chicken sandwich with a jalapeño garlic aioli. OH MY WORD this was good. The crawfish boil season fries were a perfect side for it as well.

All in all, this place has everything you’d want in a brewery. Great beers, great food, a fun for the whole family atmosphere, and plenty of events. With that being said, it was very tough to get to. BE SURE TO FOLLOW YOUR GPS AND PAY VERY CLOSE ATTENTION. It is located in New Orleans East of by the port and the roads are very confusing. But I promise it’s worth it! Also, if you take Lyft or Uber there, you can show them the receipt and get $10 off your tab! A perfect way to avoid the confusion and save a little money.

R&O’s

This is one of my favorite spots! Located in Meterie, right by Lake Pontchartrain, this is has been a local favorite since 1980. If you don’t find something you like on this menu, you’re just out of luck. From crawfish, to pizza, to poboys, soups, salads, and seafood, they really do have it all. I, myself, love to get the shrimp poboy, not dressed (so I can fit more shrimp haha) and Abita Amber to drink. I was going to get the crawfish but it is out of season by July. Crawfish season is highest during the spring. What I did do was take half the shrimp and add Tabasco hot sauce, the other side got Crystal. Im a hot sauce fan and I was curious which would taste better with the shrimp. The Crystal won haha.

If you’re up this way in New Orleans, this is a great place for lunch and dinner that has a great family feel. They do have odd hours and take a break to get ready for the dinner rush so do plan ahead!

Pal’s Lounge

Being from Virginia, I’m not used to the idea of a strict bar. We have bars but they have rules about having to sell food and all, but we lack the “corner bar.” Pal’s is perfect example of a corner bar. It has a very local feel and it definitely seems to serve the people of the neighborhood. They have a wide range of drinks and cocktails with some fun games in the back. They used to have air hockey, and my brother was hoping to “school me in air hockey” but i guess luck was on my side for its no longer there. Plenty of outdoor seating, chill atmosphere, and while yes, I ordered my PBR, they do have drinks for everyone. You’ll find Pal’s in Mid-city and you should check them out for a great corner bar experience.

Sadly, they don’t have a website that I could find. When in town, just use google Maps and just pop on by. Ring the door bell when you get there!

Museum of Death

A few months ago, I saw an article about the New Orleans Museum of Death, and I knew I had to go. Just outside of the French Quarter, this museum is a must check out. This is not for the faint of heart. I wouldn’t recommend bringing kids either. Now, it’s not the biggest museum I’ve been to but it is extremely unique. What it lacks in size, it makes up in content and originality. No photography is allowed so I wasn’t able to get any shots inside, so I guess you will have to see for yourself. Many crime scene photographs, serial killer artifacts, and the Theatre of Death, this museum is a great break from the norm. Walkable distance from the hotspots of the French Quarter and really only about 30-45 min to get through, I would recommend exploring here 100% if you dare.
